In Europe, it was proposed to divide Ukraine into two parts, as was case with Germany after WWII - Politico

Several European countries believe that after the end of the russian-Ukrainian war, Ukraine could be divided into two parts, as was the case with Germany during the Cold War.

This is stated in the Politico material, in which the publication considered all the currently known initiatives to end the war.

According to the publication, the idea of dividing Ukraine into two parts, one of which would be oriented towards the West, belongs to the Scandinavian countries.

These countries believe that the division of Germany after the end of World War II into two parts, one of which joined NATO, and the other was under the control of the Soviet Union, could become an example for Ukraine.

In this case, the western regions of Ukraine would be oriented towards the West. Perhaps in the future they could become part of NATO. The occupied territories would temporarily remain outside Ukraine.

Politico writes that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy seems to support this very idea.

Last weekend, Zelenskyy said in an interview with Sky News that in order to stop the hot phase of the war, it is necessary to take under the "NATO umbrella" that part of Ukraine that is not under russian control.

The publication recalled that Moscow is adamant that no part of Ukraine can join NATO. The Kremlin called this option an "unacceptable threat to russia's existence."

Possible talks on ceasefire and ending war

With the news that Donald Trump won the US presidential election, the West began to discuss the end of the russian-Ukrainian war much more actively.

Given the situation on the ground, where russian troops have achieved significant successes in eastern Ukraine in recent months, Western countries are increasingly talking about the war could end in a scenario in which Kyiv will have to give up some of its territories.

Recall that in early December, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview with Kyodo News that the Ukrainian army does not have the forces to liberate the occupied territories by military means.

According to him, diplomatic steps must be sought to return the territories captured by the russians. But this should be started only after Ukraine receives ironclad guarantees that russia will not attack the country again.

Zelenskyy believes that the only ironclad guarantee for Ukraine is membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.

The Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andrii Yermak wrote in a column on the website of the Dagens Industri publication that the ceasefire initiatives proposed by several countries do not contain guarantees for Ukraine.

Yermak also believes that peace can only be achieved by providing Ukraine with a large amount of weapons and inviting Kyiv to NATO. He believes that Ukraine's membership in the alliance would not entail any obligations for its other members.

The day before, we wrote that two-thirds of Ukrainians want to start negotiations on freezing the war. About half still do not believe that victory in the war should be achieved by reaching the 1991 borders.
