The US is negotiating with China to get Beijing to influence North Korea to either stop or limit the sending of North Korean troops to fight in Ukraine.

This was reported by The New York Times with reference to its own sources.

A high-ranking official of the administration of the US President told the publication on the condition of anonymity that for the past few days Washington has been in dialogue with Beijing regarding the participation of the DPRK in the war against Ukraine on the side of russia.

According to him, the national security adviser of the US President, Jake Sullivan, called on the agencies to convey their concerns to China and emphasize the possible consequences.

He also said that US and Chinese officials have recently held several meetings. The last one took place last Tuesday, October 29, in the house of the Chinese Ambassador in Washington.

This meeting was attended by US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, the United States Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Daniel Kritenbrink, and the US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, James O'Brien. It is not specified who was present from the Chinese side.

Later that day, the head of the US Department of State, Antony Blinken, spoke with the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andrii Yermak about diplomatic relations with China and other countries.

The interlocutor of the publication refused to provide more detailed information about the progress of the negotiations.

According to US estimates, China's leadership is concerned that the security partnership between North Korea and russia is rapidly strengthening.

China is a longtime ally of North Korea, providing the country with the most economic and military support. However, the rapprochement between North Korea and russia means that Beijing is increasingly forced to share influence over Pyongyang with Moscow.

North Korea's intervention in the war against Ukraine also draws Europe into the security of East Asia, which China does not really want.

In Washington, it is hoped that talks with Chinese officials about the unfolding situation could stoke Beijing's fears about the deployment of North Korean troops in russia.
