After shooting down Tu-22M3, second plane flying behind it was forced to turn around - Defense Intelligence

After shooting down a russian Tu-22M3 bomber, a second plane flying behind it was forced to turn around.

The representative of the Defense Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Andrii Yusov, announced this on the air of Radio Svoboda.

"Effective operation. The enemy strategic aviation aircraft was destroyed. For the first time during the performance of a combat mission, actually in the air during the period of a full-scale invasion. Destroyed during a combat mission. Another plane following it was forced to turn around. And this means that a number of missiles were not fired at Ukraine," Yusov said.

He did not specify exactly how the Ukrainian military managed to destroy the Tu-22M3 on the territory of russia, but says that this was a certain repeat of the operation to shoot down a russian A-50 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft.

"In general, the operation was a certain repeat, taking into account, of course, the operation of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine to shoot down the A-50 aircraft, which took place recently. Yes, the distance is even greater this time. Recall that we are talking about a distance of about 300 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. This is truly a landmark operation and a landmark result for Ukraine... In fact, miracle weapons are not used here. These are old known methods. But modified by Ukrainian specialists," says Yusov.

He also added that shooting down a strategic bomber could reduce the threat to some Ukrainian regions.

"After the destruction of the A-50 and now, after the destruction of a strategic aircraft, at least the intensity of missile attacks, which concerns aircraft based missiles, in the direction of the Odesa Region, may decrease for some time," said the representative of the Defense Intelligence.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the night of Friday, April 19, for the first time destroyed the russian Tu-22M3 long-range strategic bomber - a carrier of Kh-22 cruise missiles.
