Хірурги США змогли відновити жінці зір за допомогою штучного кришталика, закріпленого на пересадженому в око зубі. Операція, проведена Торнтон за спеціальною методикою в клініці Університету Маямі, стала першою в Америці.
Як стало відомо, Шеррон Торнтон зі штату Міссісіпі, який зараз 60 років, осліпла в 2000 році через розвиток синдрому Стівенса-Джонсона (важкої алергійної реакції, що викликає загибель клітин епітелію шкіри та слизових оболонок). Після хвороби рогівка (одна з оболонок ока) жінки стала непрозорою. Як правило, непрозору рогівку заміняють донорською або штучною, але організм, схильний до серйозних алергійних реакцій у людей, може відторгнути пересаджену тканину.
Повідомляється, що в Італії для таких пацієнтів була розроблена спеціальна методика пересаджування в око власного зуба, що служить опорою для пластикового кришталика.
Зауважимо, що спочатку хірург Віктор Перец із асистентами витягли верхнє ікло жінки із фрагментом навколишнього кореня кості й, просвердливши його, вставили в отвір, що утворився, пластикову лінзу. Потім конструкцію на два місяці помістили під шкіру пацієнтки, щоб приросла до зуба тканина шкіри стала сполучним елементом між нею і оком. Потім ікло із фрагментом шкіри пересадили в центр ока, відновивши його оптичну систему.
Через 15 днів після повного загоєння післяопераційних ран і зняття пристрою для фіксування ока зір Торнтон відновилося настільки, що вона змогла читати.
