Victory Day Celebration On May 9 Canceled In Ukraine
The Verkhovna Rada has canceled the celebration of Victory Day on May 9.
317 parliamentarians voted for the bill No. 9278 as a basis and as a whole, with the minimum required 226, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
According to the bill, the Day of Victory over Nazism in World War II (Victory Day; May 9) is removed from the list of holidays and non-working days (Article 73 of the Labor Code).
Instead, the document proposes to establish a holiday on May 8 - the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II of 1939-1945 years.
The explanatory note states that the bill is registered in order to restore historical truth and justice - Ukraine as an integral part of a large European family should celebrate the Day of Victory over Nazism in World War II of 1939-1945, together with the whole of Europe and the entire civilized democratic world on May 8.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in February, members of the Verkhovna Rada proposed that parliament cancel the celebration in Ukraine of International Women's Day on March 8, Labor Day on May 1 and Victory Day on May 9.
