Ukrainian sumo wrestler Aonishiki wins the third Emperor's Cup despite leg injuries

Ukrainian athlete Danylo Yavhusyshyn, known as Aonishiki or Aonishiki Arata, became the winner of the Nagoya Basho grand sumo tournament in the Japanese city of Nagoya.

Before the last day, the Ukrainian Aonishiki had a record of 12 wins and 2 losses. His main competitors - the Japanese Atamifuji and the Mongolian Kirishima - had one triumph less.

On the last day, the bulky Japanese (187 cm, 197 kg) was Danylo's opponent. The victory guaranteed him the championship, but he failed to win it - the opponent did not let the Ukrainian grab the belt, and then pushed Danylo out of the dohyo by force.

At the same time, the Mongolian Kirishima also won his duel. That is, the three sumo wrestlers had 12 victories each after the Nagoya Basho.

The playoff lasted until one of the sumo wrestlers won two consecutive victories in a row, and everything was decided after the first round. Aonishiki took revenge in Atamifuji, and then, as the publication notes, defeated Kirishima in a difficult fight.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Ukrainian gymnast Taisiya Onofriychuk became the winner of the overall standings of the 2026 World Cup in rhythmic gymnastics in hoop exercises. The season results were summed up after the final stage of the series, which took place in Milan, Italy.
