At NATO summit, Zelenskyy inadvertently broke "EU cap rule" and drew media attention
During the NATO summit, Volodymyr Zelenskyy opened a plastic water bottle by completely tearing off the cap and setting it aside. It was this incident that caught the attention of Western media, as European Union countries already have a rule requiring plastic bottle caps to remain attached.
Why bottle caps can no longer be completely removed in the EU?
According to European environmental requirements, plastic bottle manufacturers must produce containers with caps that remain attached after opening. This rule was adopted to prevent caps from being lost in the environment and to ensure they are recycled along with the bottles.
That is precisely why the moment when Zelenskyy completely detached the cap sparked discussion in Western media and on social media.
What Ukrainians do with bottle caps?
Social media users reacted to this incident in different ways. Some note that even such environmental rules take some getting used to, while others find attached caps inconvenient.
At the same time, in Ukraine, most people still completely remove the cap when opening a plastic bottle. For many, this is a habitual action, since such caps have appeared on the Ukrainian market relatively recently, and the practice itself has not yet become commonplace. Some consumers simply screw the cap back on after use before throwing the bottle away for recycling.
As a reminder, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reached political agreements with US President Donald Trump at the NATO summit regarding licenses for the production of Patriot systems in Ukraine.
