Today, Ukraine celebrates Constitution Day - 30th anniversary of main law of state

Today, June 28, Ukraine celebrates Constitution Day - the basic law of Ukraine, which established the foundations of the life of the state and society, in particular sovereignty, territorial integrity and human rights. This is the only holiday in Ukraine that is spelled out in the Constitution itself. Ukrainian News Agency will tell you about the path to the adoption of the basic law of the state.

A trip to history

315 members of the Verkhovna Rada supported the adoption of the Constitution of Ukraine, which took place at 9:20 am on June 28, 1996. From June 27 to 28, for about a day, the MPs worked in the session hall and voted separately for each article. This historical event was called "constitutional night" because of the longest session in the history of independent Ukraine.

Interestingly, the preparation of the Basic Law lasted about six years before the parliament adopted this fundamental document. During 1991-1996, a special Constitutional Commission, together with political parties and scholars, prepared 15 drafts of the Basic Law, but none of them received sufficient support in the Verkhovna Rada.

Interesting facts about the Constitution of Ukraine:

The then MP Mykhailo Syrota is considered the "father" of the Constitution. It was he who read out all its articles from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada on "constitutional night". At the same time, the Ukrainian Constitution is called one of the most democratic in the world.

Interesting fact:

On June 8, 1996, at 9:18 am, the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Oleksandr Moroz, uttered the words that went down in history - "There is a Constitution!"

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, 11 free excursions have been prepared in Kyiv for Constitution Day, including two bus tours.

The original of the Constitution of Ukraine of 1996 is stored in one of the repositories of the Central State Archive and is protected from the effects of emergency conditions.

In Ukraine, for the 30th anniversary of the Constitution, its full translation into Ukrainian sign language was created for the first time.
