Law enforcers of Estonia install first UAV detection systems on border with russia - Estonian Interior Ministry

Estonia has installed the first stationary drone detection and monitoring systems along the southeastern section of its border with russia and plans to deploy them along the entire land border.

It was reported by the ERR news portal.

Estonian Minister of the Interior Igor Taro announced that the first devices are already operational.

"The first devices have been installed and are operational. Of course, this is just the beginning: we are moving toward creating a drone network that will cover all of Estonia, but this step shows that the preliminary preparatory work has borne fruit. Recent drone incidents show that we have assessed the risks very realistically when planning our capabilities," he noted.

In areas where fixed equipment is not yet available or additional monitoring is needed, the Police and Border Guard Board will use new mobile monitoring systems.

According to the minister, border security is constantly being strengthened, and modernization work is proceeding on schedule or ahead of schedule. Currently, the Border Guard Board is procuring equipment for the next stages of system deployment.

On May 19, a drone—presumably of Ukrainian origin and flying toward russia—was shot down for the first time in Estonian airspace. The aerial target was destroyed by fighter jets from the Baltic Security Mission over a marshy area, prompting authorities to issue a threat alert for the local population in several regions of the country.

Heorhii Tykhyi, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commented on the incident involving the downing of the drone over Estonian territory.

According to Tykhyi, russia continues to use electronic warfare to redirect Ukrainian drones toward the Baltic states. He emphasized that moscow is doing this deliberately and is simultaneously accompanying these actions with an active information campaign.
