Once russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine ends, the European Union will resume purchasing russian gas because it is cheaper. Prime Minister Péter Magyar made this statement in an interview with the newspaper Rzeczpospolita on Thursday, May 21.

Magyar noted that he considers himself pragmatic when it comes to energy resources. According to him, prices and geography remain the key factors in this matter, as russia will remain where it is. The Prime Minister emphasized that the Hungarian people have entrusted him with the task of diversifying our energy sources and ensuring supply security as much as possible. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) transported via the Baltic Sea, through Poland and Slovakia, is significantly more expensive than gas imported from Romania, russia, or Austria.

"I think that when the war ends, the entire European Union will return to buying Russian gas because it’s cheaper. This is determined by competitiveness and geography. It’s simple. But, gentlemen, you’ll see for yourselves. I can’t predict everything, but that’s my feeling... I think this EU policy will change significantly after the war ends. I hope that happens very soon. We need to be competitive—Hungary, Poland. And for that, we need lower energy prices,” Magyar emphasized.

Hungary would be very happy to have multiple sources of energy supply, as this provides greater security and gives a better starting point for negotiations on lower prices, the politician said.
