Number of Ukrainians under temporary protection in EU countries decreased - Eurostat data shows
As of March 31, 2026, 4.33 million people had temporary protection status in the European Union (EU). These are people who left Ukraine as a result of russia's full-scale invasion.
This is stated in official Eurostat information.
Compared to the end of February, the total number of recipients of protection decreased by 68,980 people, or 1.6%.
The following EU countries currently host the largest number of Ukrainians:
- Germany - 1,274,955 people, or 29.4% of the total number in the EU;
- Poland - 961,405 people, which is 22.2% of all status recipients;
- Czech Republic - 379,820 people, whose share is 8.8%.
It is noted that during March the number of persons under protection increased in 14 EU countries, while a decrease was recorded in 13 states. The largest increase was observed in Germany (+7,480 people), Spain (+2,665) and Romania (+2,125).
The largest decrease in indicators was recorded in Italy (-30,365 people), which is explained by the expiration of a large number of permits due to the procedure for their annual renewal. The number of status recipients also decreased in the Czech Republic (-19,810) and Finland (-8,080).
"The highest ratios of persons granted temporary protection per thousand people were observed in the Czech Republic (34.8), Poland (26.3) and Slovakia (26.2), while the corresponding figure at the EU level was 9.6 per thousand people," the report says.
According to Eurostat, Ukrainian citizens account for over 98.4% of all persons granted temporary protection in the EU.
Among them:
- adult women - 43.3%;
- minors - 30.1%;
- adult men - 26.6%.
