The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) counterintelligence prevented a high-profile terrorist attack in Odesa by detaining a russian agent who was trying to eliminate a high-ranking official of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The SSU press service announced this on its Telegram channel, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The detention was due to the SSU's round-the-clock work in anticipation and the timely notification of a concerned citizen who contacted the Security Service's "hotline" with a report about a suspicious person.

According to the plan of russian special services, the officer's murder was to take place on May 9 in order to create a favorable information background for the Kremlin to celebrate "Victory Day".

As the investigation established, the hitman planned to ambush a Ukrainian serviceman near his residence and was going to shoot him with a machine gun.

According to available information, the attacker was supposed to open fire when the officer was driving his car while leaving the yard.

Counterintelligence officers and special forces of the Center of Special Operations "Alpha" of the SSU foiled the attempt and detained the killer on May 8.

According to the case materials, the suspect turned out to be a repeat offender from the Donetsk Region recruited by the enemy, who had previously served a sentence for premeditated murder.

The man came to the attention of the rashists when he was looking for "easy money" in specialized Telegram channels.

After recruitment, he arrived in Odesa, where he rented an apartment to prepare for the attack. First, the suspect tracked down the Ukrainian serviceman's apartment, conducted additional reconnaissance of the surrounding area and chose places for an ambush.

Then, the agent received the coordinates of the caches from the curator from the russian federation, from which he took an AK-74 assault rifle and two equipped magazines.

To hide the weapon while moving around the city, the killer used a bag with a double bottom.

SSU investigators informed the agent of suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: Part 2 of Article 111 (high treason committed under martial law) and Part 3 of Article 15, Article 258 (unfinished attempt to commit a terrorist act).

The attacker is in custody, facing life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, military counterintelligence and investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine detained a local resident in Kharkiv who, on the orders of the russian occupiers, burned two SUVs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in a front-line city.
