US will allocate USD 100 million to Ukraine to repair Chornobyl NPP containment structure

The United States will allocate USD 100 million for repairs to the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant’s containment structure, which sustained significant damage as a result of a drone attack by the aggressor country, russia. First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal has announced this on his Telegram channel on Wednesday, April 29.

Shmyhal noted that he had discussed with partners the funds needed to restore the protective structure of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. According to him, a total of about EUR 500 million is required for this.

During the International Chornobyl Conference, we discussed with our partners the financial needs for the restoration of the containment structure. As of today, this amounts to approximately EUR 500 million.

"The US will allocate USD 100 million for the repair of the Chornobyl NPP containment structure, which was damaged by a Russian drone. I am grateful to the US State Department, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, the American delegation that worked with us in Kyiv, and the entire Administration for their significant contribution to strengthening radiation safety in Europe," the energy minister emphasized.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on the night of February 14, 2025, a russian Shahed-type strike drone struck the roof of the New Safe Confinement.

On the day of the attack, Chornobyl NPP Chief Engineer Oleksandr Tytarchuk stated that the drone strike posed a risk of radioactive material leakage.

As a reminder, EUR 400,000 was allocated from the Ukrainian budget to investigate damage to the Chornobyl NPP shelter.
