Foreign Affairs Ministry creates post of special envoy for prisoners of war and missing persons

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has created the post of Ambassador-at-Large for issues related to prisoners of war, civilians deprived of personal liberty and missing persons. Dmytro Ponomarenko was appointed to this position, the press service of the ministry reports.

It is noted that Ponomarenko has devoted many years to building relations with the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. In 2021-2025, he represented Ukraine as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Korea and concurrently in Mongolia.

"The Ambassador-at-Large will coordinate within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to find effective mechanisms to influence the aggressor state of Russia to prevent torture and inhuman treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war, as well as cooperation in the release of Ukrainian defenders, civilians deprived of their personal liberty, and protection of the rights of missing persons," the statement said.

Recently, 175 military and 7 civilians were returned to their homeland.
