US will provide security guarantees if Ukraine gives up Donbas - Zelenskyy
The United States is ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees for a peace agreement if Kyiv hands over the entire Donbas to the aggressor country of russia. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported this in an interview with Reuters on Wednesday, March 25.
Zelenskyy noted that President Donald Trump is currently focused on fighting against Iran, so he is putting pressure on Ukraine to end the war in Ukraine as soon as possible. According to him, the United States has offered security guarantees necessary for a peace deal, provided that the Donbas is fully transferred to russia.
"The Americans are prepared to finalise these guarantees at a high level once Ukraine is ready to withdraw from Donbas. Such a withdrawal would compromise the security of both Ukraine and, by extension, Europe, by handing the region's strong defensive positions to Russia," Zelenskyy said.
President Trump is influenced by the situation in the Middle East and his next steps, the head of state emphasized. According to Zelenskyy, russia is betting that Washington will lose interest in the negotiations and withdraw from them: "President Trump, unfortunately, in my opinion, still chooses a strategy of putting more pressure on the Ukrainian side," Zelenskyy said.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 25, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the documents on the United States' security guarantees for Ukraine were fully prepared and were waiting to be signed.
On January 24, the Italian edition of Corriere della Sera wrote that Ukraine was offered to give up the part of the Donbas it controls in exchange for USD 800 billion and security guarantees.
In late December 2025, Zelenskyy said that the United States offered Ukraine a security guarantee agreement for 15 years.
