NABU: Halushchenko launders more than USD 12 million over 4 years
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau continues to investigate the Midas case, a large-scale corruption scheme in the Ukrainian energy sector. One of its defendants is former Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko, in whose favor, according to the NABU, USD 12.9 million was laundered.
The NABU reports this in a new video, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
On the NABU tapes, Halushchenko appears under the call sign Sihizmund. According to the investigation, Halushchenko was involved in kickbacks that Energoatom's contractors had to pay to get paid for the fulfilled contracts. This scheme was called the "barrier", and Halushchenko was a key element in it.
It has been established that the money received illegally was laundered through a fund registered on the island of Anguilla (a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom). Its investors were other suspects in the Midas case - Sugerman (Oleksandr Zukerman) and Carlson (Timur Mindich)
To conceal Herman Halushchenko's participation in this fund, three companies were set up in the Marshall Islands, the beneficiaries of which were his ex-wife and children.
The NABU said that during 2021-2025, USD 12.9 million was laundered in favor of Herman Halushchenko. The funds were mainly received and accumulated in the accounts of the fund, in Swiss banking institutions, and were also placed on a deposit, from which the family of the former minister received additional income.
The evidence obtained shows that Halushchenko, while serving as Minister of Energy, received more than USD 7.4 million to the accounts of two companies registered in the Marshall Islands. Almost USD 4 million more was paid out in cash in Switzerland. Part of these funds were spent on expensive education of Halushchenko's children in prestigious educational institutions in Switzerland, and the money was also accumulated on the card accounts of his ex-wife, said Oleksandr Abakumov, head of the NABU detective unit.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on February 17, an investigating judge of the High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) imposed a preventive measure on former Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko in the form of custody for a period until April 15, 2026 inclusive.
