Potato prices start to rise in Ukraine
At the beginning of this week, potatoes have started to rise in price on the domestic market of Ukraine.
This is stated in a report by the EastFruit project, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
The report states that, according to producers, stocks of high-quality potatoes in storage are gradually decreasing, and this is the main reason for the increase in prices in this segment.
Today, Ukrainian producers offer potatoes for sale in the range of UAH 7-14 per kilogram, depending on the quality, variety and volume of the proposed batches of products, which is on average 17% more expensive than a week earlier.
According to experts, the main reason for the increase in interest in purchases was the general reduction in the supply of potatoes in local farms.
The fact is that many producers who do not have long-term storage capacities have completed the sale of their products before the New Year.
Experts believe that in the last months of the current marketing season, mass supplies of imported potatoes to the Ukrainian market are not excluded, which is traditional, despite the high production rates of "second bread" in Ukraine, which are declared by the State Statistics Service of Ukraine.
It is noted that price support is also provided by a fairly high demand for quality products from wholesale companies, which increasingly declare the absence of the necessary volumes of such products in farms.
Farmers, in turn, associate the main quality problems with adverse weather conditions during the harvest period in 2025: prolonged rains negatively affected not only the marketable appearance of potatoes, but also their keeping quality.
At the same time, today potatoes in Ukraine are sold on average 56% cheaper than in the same period last year.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, greenhouse plants in Ukraine have begun harvesting cucumbers of the new crop.
