For first time in recent years - in 2025, number of 100 and 50 hryvnia banknotes in circulation increased
In 2025, for the first time in recent years, the number of 100 and 50 hryvnia banknotes in circulation increased (by 4.5% and 6.3%, respectively, compared to the beginning of the year).
The National Bank has announced this, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
The regulator reminds that from October 1, 2025, the gradual withdrawal of 10 kopeck coins began.
It is noted that in 2025, 3.1 million pieces of coins of this denomination have already been withdrawn. Currently, the share of coins of this denomination in the total amount in circulation at the beginning of the year is 27.2%
In contrast, 50 kopeck coins remain in steady demand, in particular from the trade and services sector. Their share of the total amount in circulation is 9.1%.
The dynamics of coin volumes in circulation shows that the highest growth rate in 2025 was for 5 and 10 hryvnia coins.
Their number in circulation increased by 21% and 29%, respectively, compared to the beginning of 2025.
This trend is due to the fact that the NBU continues to gradually withdraw from circulation banknotes in denominations of 1, 2, 5, and 10 hryvnias, replacing them with the corresponding coins that can be in circulation for a much longer time.
The number of 25 kopeck coins in cash circulation has decreased the most over the past year, with 0.1% less of them in circulation compared to the beginning of 2025, due to the withdrawal of these non-payment coins from circulation.
In 2025, for the first time in recent years, the number of 100- and 50-hryvnia banknotes in circulation increased (by 4.5% and 6.3%, respectively, compared to the beginning of the year). This may be a result of changes in the NBU's tariff policy aimed at increasing the level of banknotes' circulation
At the same time, among the banknotes used to back up cash circulation, the largest decrease in the number of banknotes was observed in the 200-hryvnia denomination, which decreased by 17.6% last year (in particular, due to their active replacement by 1,000-hryvnia banknotes and the gradual withdrawal of old banknotes of this denomination from circulation).
The number of 10- and 5-hryvnia banknotes also decreased significantly (by 10% and 8%, respectively), as, as already mentioned, they are gradually being withdrawn from circulation and replaced by the corresponding coins.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in 2025, the amount of cash in circulation in Ukraine increased by 12.6% (or by UAH 103.9 billion) and amounted to UAH 926.3 billion as of January 1, 2026.
