NATO countries are considering the possibility of launching a separate joint mission to monitor and ensure security in the Arctic region, particularly around Greenland. Germany intends to formally propose the initiative.

It was reported by Bloomberg, citing informed sources.

It is a project with the working title Arctic Sentinel. It is supposed to function similarly to the Baltic Sentinel mission, which the Alliance launched in January 2025 to protect critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.

NATO's interest in Greenland has intensified amid statements by US President Donald Trump, who has long expressed the idea of the island joining the United States. According to Bloomberg, this topic has gained new momentum after the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.

At the same time, as the Telegraph writes, citing its own sources, the UK is consulting with allies on the possible deployment of military units in Greenland. According to the newspaper's interlocutors, British officials have already held meetings with representatives of Germany, France and other countries to agree on the first steps.

European countries expect that a demonstrative strengthening of NATO's role in the Arctic will reduce the chances of Trump's plans to annex the island. At the same time, British Foreign Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasizes that all discussions within the Alliance are focused primarily on protecting Greenland from potential threats from russia.

What is known about Trump's encroachment on Greenland?

Donald Trump believes that russia or China will occupy Greenland if the island is not controlled by the United States. Therefore, the US leadership discussed the option of paying a one-time aid to Greenlanders as part of a campaign to discuss the island's accession to the United States.

On January 8, Politico wrote that several options for the development of the situation around Trump's desire to get Greenland are being discussed in Europe. Some officials propose to exchange the island for clearer security guarantees for Ukraine.
