Security guarantees for Ukraine should become the EU's first line of defense - Von der Leyen

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed after a conversation with Volodymyr Zelenskyy that in the peace talks, Ukraine needs to be provided with long-term security guarantees that will become the EU's "first line of defense." She stated this in X.

She underlined the European Union's unwavering position, stressing that security guarantees for Ukraine are a priority for the EU.

"We confirmed to President Zelenskyy that the EU remains steadfast and committed to its principles. Ukraine's sovereignty must be respected. Ukraine's security must be guaranteed in the long term as the first line of defense of our Union," she said.

Von der Leyen stressed that during the peace talks, "the EU remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine." She added that the EU's proposals for funding have already been presented, and the goal is to create "a strong Ukraine, on the battlefield and at the negotiating table."
