Federica Mogherini, suspected of abusing EU budget, lobbied for creation of anti-corruption bodies in Ukraine and praised local activists
Former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini, who is currently a figurehead in the investigation into the alleged misuse of EU budget funds in 2021-2022, once lobbied for the creation of anti-corruption bodies in Ukraine. This is reported by Ukrainian News Agency.
Thus, in 2015, during a meeting with the then President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, Mogherini insisted on the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) starting its work as soon as possible.
"First of all, we emphasized the need for anti-corruption reform, which is key to ensuring the trust of partners in Ukraine <…> We emphasized that the Anti-Corruption Bureau should start its work in the near future," Mogherini emphasized.
And in 2017-2018, Mogherini repeatedly demanded that Ukraine create an independent Anti-Corruption Court.
"We emphasize that we are friends and partners in this issue - in the fight against corruption. We are ready to support Ukraine," Mogherini said on December 8, 2017, while on a visit to Kyiv.
At the same time, the European official separately praised Ukrainian activists working in the fight against corruption. Mogherini called them "a very strong asset."
As is known, the charges against Mogherini also concern alleged abuses during tenders, conflicts of interest and violations of professional secrecy within the framework of the activities of the College of Europe, where diplomats are trained. Mogherini has been working there as rector since September 2020.
