European Parliament proposes banning social media for children under 16

The European Parliament has supported a resolution calling for banning children under 16 from using social media. The Guardian reported this.

MEPs cite studies showing that one in four teenagers has had a negative experience using a smartphone. They say that social media's special mechanisms aimed at keeping users' attention are particularly dangerous, as they are addictive and harmful to children's mental health.

The European Commission plans to turn the resolution into a full-fledged law. Brussels also intends to analyze the experience of Australia, where a ban on social media for children will come into force next month.

By the end of the year, the EU will create an expert group to develop recommendations on the best methods for protecting children in the digital environment.
