US President Donald Trump has tightened his demands in trade talks with the EU, insisting on a minimum duty on all EU goods of 15% to 20% in any deal with the bloc, and Europeans are preparing for a possible trade war with the United States.

It was reported by the Financial Times.

According to the publication's sources, the American leader wants to keep the duties on cars from the European Union at 25%.

Moreover, one of the American officials told reporters that the administration of Donald Trump is considering the possibility of imposing reciprocal tariffs exceeding 10%, even if an agreement is reached.

If Trump persists with his tariff proposal, it could prompt the EU to retaliate, according to the EU diplomats, who requested anonymity.

"We don't want a trade war, but we don't know if the US will leave us a choice," they said.

Journalists note that the EU has planned several packages of retaliatory tariffs, but has repeatedly postponed their implementation, tying them to negotiations with Trump.

In particular, the bloc may impose duties on American chicken and jeans, which will come into force on August 6.

The European Commission has also proposed to impose duties on Boeing airplanes and bourbon if the talks fail to conclude. The size of possible duties on American goods is not specified.

The European Commission is also considering the introduction of taxes on digital services and online advertising revenues as a response.

At the same time, journalists remind that the United States is the largest market for the EU, accounting for 20% of the bloc's exports.
