Search operations completed in Odesa, rescuers find 10 killed
In Odesa, rescuers have completed search operations and emergency recovery efforts are underway. This was reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) in Telegram.
At more than 60 facilities in the city, SESU experts have already completely pumped out water and prepared the infrastructure for further restoration. Work continues at about 30 sites.
"The main thing is that we have made sure that there are no more victims of the disaster. There are 10 killed. More than 380 people have been rescued. All applications from the people have been processed," the statement said.
It is reported that the largest masses of water have accumulated in underground parking lots. Elimination of flooding in these premises is the most difficult. Almost 130 motorized pumps are in operation, and additional forces from other regions have been brought in. More than 15,000 cubic meters of water have been pumped out of the parking lots alone.
"As for the shelters: out of 42 flooded ones, 40 have already been pumped out and prepared for use. Work is still ongoing at 2 civil defense facilities," the SESU said.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on September 30, in Odesa, in 7 hours of rain, two-month rainfall fell. Electric transport has stopped and traffic is difficult. Utilities, rescuers and volunteers are pumping out water and helping the townspeople. On October 1, schools switched to remote learning due to the bad weather, and some of the premises were flooded.
Nine people, including one child, were killed as a result of the bad weather.
On October 2, Odesa and the region declared a day of mourning.
