US warned that any country that buys russian oil could face 100% tariffs
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that any country that buys oil from russia's aggressor countries could expect 100% secondary tariffs against it.
Bessent made the relevant statement in an interview with CNBC on Monday, July 21.
According to him, US President Donald Trump was able to prove that secondary tariffs are becoming the main sanctioning tool for Washington. At the same time, the US Senate is now fully on the President's side on this issue.
"Now the United States Senate agrees with President Trump that tariffs are a means to political ends. And this is revolutionary," said Bessent.
The minister emphasized that now any country that buys russian oil will be subject to secondary tariffs of up to 100% after being subject to sanctions.
Bessent also noted that China is a very large buyer of sanctioned russian and Iranian oil.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on July 14, President Trump threatened russia with tough tariffs if moscow did not reach a peace agreement within 50 days.
