EU considering option of paying for weapons for Ukraine at expense of russian assets

The European Union is discussing the creation of a mechanism that would allow financing the supply of weapons to Ukraine at the expense of frozen russian assets. The Telegraph reported this, citing diplomatic sources.

On July 15, a meeting of EU foreign ministers took place in Brussels, where the key topic was the coordination of the process of purchasing weapons in the United States and the search for sources of financing. One of the proposed options involves the creation of a joint financial base with the participation of EU countries and Canada, from which weapons will be purchased in accordance with Ukrainian requests.

NATO is expected to play a coordinating role in the supply of weapons in order to guarantee the transparency of the process. At the same time, some European politicians express concerns that the use of russian assets may be perceived by moscow as a provocation.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski called for using the proceeds from frozen russian funds to cover arms spending, stressing that such an approach would relieve the financial burden on taxpayers in Europe.
