Even if war continues for some time, it will not hinder Ukraine's progress in EU – European Commissioner Marta Kos

Despite the full-scale war, Ukraine has real prospects for joining the European Union.

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has stated this in an interview with Ukrinform.

At the same time, she emphasized the unprecedented nature of the situation: for the first time in history, the EU is conducting membership negotiations with a state that is at war.

"We are moving through wartime circumstances. And if the war continues - and I sincerely hope not – it will still not stop the process of Ukraine's accession to the European Union," Kos noted.

According to her, the European Commission plans to open all negotiation clusters by the end of 2025. The first of them - "Fundamentals", which covers reforms in the fight against corruption, the judiciary, public procurement and the rule of law - may be launched in the near future. It is also planned to complete the screening of Ukrainian legislation by the fall.

Kos stressed that Brussels is making every effort to accelerate the process, as Ukraine has already fulfilled a significant part of the requirements.

"Ukraine will become a member of the EU by 2030," she said.

Kos also expressed hope that this will happen before the end of her mandate in 2029.

The European Commissioner also pointed to an active disinformation campaign by russia, directed against Ukraine, Moldova and the European Union itself.

"We must resist Russian propaganda, the aim of which is to destroy your aspirations in the EU," she added.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has already stated that the European Commission supports the opening of negotiations with Ukraine on joining the EU. European Parliament President Roberta Metzola also supported the start of negotiations on European integration with Ukraine, as well as Moldova.
