World's largest telescope at Vera Rubin Observatory takes its first look into space. Images published
The Vera Rubin Observatory has published images of space taken by a new 8.3-meter telescope, which is scheduled to be launched in September 2025.
The observatory team published the images of space on its X (Twitter) page.
The new telescope took images of the Trifid and Lagoon nebulae, which are located in the constellation Sagittarius.
The images show dust lanes and star clusters that "animate" this part of the Milky Way.
"The exquisite detail of this image demonstrates the exceptional quality of the entire system - from the telescope to the camera and data processing systems," the message says.
What is the Vera Rubin Observatory and what is known about new telescope in it
The Vera Rubin Observatory is a wide-angle reflector telescope on Mount Cerro Pachón in Chile. Its construction began in August 2014.
The construction of the telescope is being carried out as part of a joint project of the US National Science Foundation and the Office of Science of the US Department of Energy.
Today, June 23, the telescope was used for the first time, and its full operation is scheduled for September 16, 2025.
The diameter of the telescope's mirror is 8.36 meters, which makes it the largest among similar objects. Before it, the Gemini telescope (8.1 meters), also located on Mount Cerro Pachón, could boast of the largest mirror.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in May of this year, the James Webb Space Telescope showed how the aurora occurs on Jupiter.
Let us remind you that on April 24, the legendary Hubble telescope celebrated its 35th anniversary.
