Zelenskyy hopes for close cooperation with newly elected South Korean President Lee Jae-myung to achieve peace

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hopes for close cooperation with newly elected South Korean President Lee Jae-myung to achieve peace. Zelenskyy announced this on the X social network, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"I congratulate Lee Jae-myung on his victory in the election. I appreciate our friendship with the Korean people and the unwavering support of Ukraine from the Republic of Korea. The security of the world, the European and Pacific regions are interconnected. When russia opens the way for evil to the world, we must all together build the foundations of reliable security for people. I wish you success and look forward to close cooperation with you to achieve peace and prosperity for both peoples," he noted.

61-year-old politician Lee Jae-myung won the early presidential election of South Korea on June 3, after the fall of the government of Yoon Suk Yeol, which in December 2024 tried to impose martial law, citing "anti-state activities of the opposition" and which was later impeached by parliament.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in March, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and his South Korean counterpart Cho Tae-yul had a telephone conversation to discuss the repatriation of North Korean prisoners of war.

In November 2024, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov met in Seoul with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to exchange Ukrainian intelligence data on military cooperation between russia and North Korea, as well as discuss a joint response to new security threats.

Umerov then noted that he believed that his arguments about the need to increase cooperation between Ukraine and South Korea would lead to a tangible strengthening of regional security.
