Mexican Navy ship collides with Brooklyn Bridge support: 2 dead

On May 17, in New York, US, the Mexican Navy training ship "Cuauhtémoc" collided with one of the supports of the Brooklyn Bridge. As a result of the incident, two people were killed, another 19 were injured, two of them are in critical condition.

The collision occurred during the passage of the ship under the bridge as part of a goodwill tour. According to New York Mayor Eric Adams, the ship lost power before the collision. At the time of the incident, there were 277 people on board.

According to the Coast Guard, during the collision, crew members were on the ship's masts. All masts collapsed onto the deck. No one fell into the water.

The Brooklyn Bridge, according to preliminary data, did not suffer significant damage. Police are investigating a technical malfunction as a possible cause of the incident. The vessel was towed from the scene.

The Cuauhtémoc is a three-masted sailboat 300 feet long and 40 feet wide. The ship is on annual training cruises after completing classes at the Mexican Naval Academy. This year's voyage began on April 6 in Acapulco and ended in Iceland.
