We hope for Vatican's continued support - Zelenskyy congratulates new Pope Leo XIV

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Robert Prevost, who took the name Pope Leo XIV, on his election as Pope. He expressed hope for the Vatican's continued support for Ukraine in restoring justice and achieving lasting peace.

He reported this on social networks.

"I sincerely congratulate Pope Leo XIV on his election to the Throne of Saint Peter and the beginning of his pontificate," the message says.

Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine highly appreciates the consistent position of the Holy See on compliance with international law, condemnation of the russian federation's military aggression against Ukraine, and protection of the rights of innocent civilians.

He added that Ukraine hopes for further moral and spiritual support from the Vatican for Ukraine's efforts aimed at restoring justice and achieving lasting peace.

"I wish His Holiness Leo XIV wisdom, inspiration, spiritual and physical strength in fulfilling his high mission. Ad multos annos! (from Latin "Many years!" - Ed.)" Zelenskyy wished.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported on May 8, white smoke appeared from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, confirming the election of the new Pope.

The decision was made on the second day of voting. Robert Francis Prevost became the first Pope from the United States.
