New Pope Leo XIV argues with US Vice President Vance before pontificate

Pope Leo XIV, elected on May 8, criticized US Vice President J.D. Vance's statements about the "ranks of love" in February, calling them inconsistent with the words of Jesus.

This is evidenced by his post on X.

So, Pope Leo XIV responded to an article in the National Catholic Reporter, which discussed J.D. Vance's words from January 29:

"There is a Christian concept that you love your family and then you love your neighbor, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens, and then after that, prioritize the rest of the world. A lot of the far left has completely inverted that."

Then the discussion on the Internet was divided on whether these sentiments were biblical or not. Robert Prevost himself, who took the name Leo XIV, declared that J.D. Vance was wrong.

"JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn't ask us to rank our love for others," he commented.

Later, a similar position was expressed by Pope Francis, categorically rejecting the theology of the US vice president.

Meanwhile, radical right-wing Republicans consider the Pope to be a supporter of "left" ideology. In particular, American political activist Laura Loomer drew attention to the posts that Prevost shared on X. These posts concern support for migrants, as well as criticism of Trump for using the phrase "bad hombres" ("bad people", where hombres is a person who is especially strong or cruel) in relation to illegal immigrants, which was called "racist".

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, meanwhile, according to the new Pope's brother, Leo XIV "will not be very left and will not be very right. He will be somewhere in the middle."

Recall, on May 8, white smoke appeared from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, which confirmed the election of the new Pope. The decision was made on the second day of voting. Robert Francis Prevost became the first Pope from the United States.

US President Donald Trump congratulated Robert Francis Prevost on his election as Pope, calling it an honor for the United States. He added that he was looking forward to the meeting.
