Russia preparing for large-scale breakthrough in Donetsk Region. ISW names Axes

The russian command is transferring units from several sectors of the front to the Donbas and is preparing a coordinated offensive in two areas of the Donetsk Region. These are the Toretsk and Pokrovsk Axes. This was reported by analysts from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

According to ISW, russia has redeployed units of the 68th Army Corps and the 58th Combined Arms Army from the Zaporizhzhia Region and the Kurakhove district to the Toretsk area. These include, in particular, the 39th Motorized Rifle Brigade and the 42nd Motorized Rifle Division. Parts of this division, according to analysts, are still operating in the Zaporizhzhia Axis, so the units are probably dispersed.

"In early 2025, the russian military command intensified offensive operations southwest of Toretsk with units of the 150th and 20th motorized rifle divisions. The repeated movement of reinforcements from three different sectors of the front indicates that the russian military command considers this direction to be one of the priorities," the report says.

Russian troops have already advanced within the settlement of Myrne and are trying to advance in the direction of Malynivka. Fighting is also ongoing in the areas of Stara Mykolaivka, Oleksandropol, and Kalynove.

ISW reports that the russian federation may conduct an interconnected operation aimed at eliminating the Ukrainian advance southwest of Toretsk in order to create a bridgehead for further advancement to Kostiantynivka and attempts to surround Myrnohrad and Pokrovsk.

"Russian forces may try to use recent redeployments to the Toretsk and eastern Pokrovsk Axes as part of an interconnected operation aimed at eliminating the Ukrainian advance southwest of Toretsk for further advancement to Kostiantynivka from the south and the encirclement of Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad," the analysts conclude.
