33 parliamentarians propose to Rada to create Space Forces of Armed Forces of Ukraine
33 members of the Verkhovna Rada propose to the parliament to create a new branch of the Armed Forces of Ukraine — the Space Forces.
This is stated in bill No. 13255, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
It is proposed to change the structure of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, namely to supplement the branches of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which currently include the Ground Forces, Air Forces, and Navy.
It is proposed to add the Space Forces to them.
As stated in the explanatory note to the bill, the adoption of such changes is aimed at strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities and ensuring readiness to counter missile threats from space, in particular from russia, and at the same time, it will allow Ukraine to join the club of states that have their own space forces, such as the US, France, UK, China, and India.
The creation of the Space Forces is technically possible due to the existing scientific and technical potential of Ukraine, including the production of satellites, the presence of ground infrastructure and participation in international programs, such as the American Artemis program.
According to the explanatory note, the Ministry of Defense has already created a space policy department and is developing a regulatory framework for the launch of national defense satellites.
The authors assure that the draft law is supported by the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, however, public consultations with other interested parties have not been held.
The financing of the newly created Space Forces is provided for from funds allocated for the security and defense sector.
Among the authors: members of the National Security Committee Fedir Venislavskyi, Oleksandr Fediienko, Yurii Zdebskyi (all - the Servant of the People faction) and Roman Kostenko (the Holos faction).
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence recommends that the parliament adopt the bill "On Cyber Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine" as a basis.
