US fighter jet crashes into sea from USS Harry S. Truman during Houthi attack - CNN

An American F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet crashed into the Red Sea from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier while maneuvering to avoid a Houthi attack. The plane sank, an investigation is ongoing.

The incident occurred on April 28, when the US carrier strike group was in the Red Sea. According to CNN, citing the US Navy, the crew lost control of the aircraft while towing the F/A-18E Super Hornet into the hold.

"The F/A-18E was being towed to the hangar when the crew lost control. The fighter and the tractor fell overboard. The sailors managed to retreat before the aircraft crashed into the sea. The incident is under investigation," the US Navy said in a statement.

It is noted that the maneuver occurred against the backdrop of an attack by the Houthi group, which announced the launch of drones and missiles at the American aircraft carrier. In response, the crew of the USS Harry S. Truman made a sharp evasive maneuver to avoid a potential strike, as a result of which the fighter, worth more than USD 60 million, went overboard and sank.

Despite the incident, the aircraft carrier continued to carry out a combat mission in the Red Sea.

This is not the first incident involving the USS Harry S. Truman. In February 2025, the ship collided with a merchant vessel near Egypt, although no one was injured then. And in December 2024, another F/A-18 fighter jet from the same aircraft carrier was accidentally shot down by the USS Gettysburg during a training exercise. Both pilots successfully ejected and survived.
