Gas supplies from russia to EU fall to minimum since start of war
Natural gas supplies from russia to the European Union countries in January-March 2025 fell to a minimum since the start of the war in Ukraine.
This is reported by DW.com with reference to the Euractiv portal.
In January-March 2025, russia supplied 10.458 billion cubic meters of gas to the European Union countries.
This is the lowest figure since the start of the war in Ukraine and at least since 1980.
The United States overtook russia, becoming the second largest supplier of gas to the EU.
It is noted that in the first quarter of 2025, the main source of gas imports to the EU was pipeline supplies from Norway – 23,593 billion cubic meters.
In second place was liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States - 18.393 billion cubic meters.
In third place are supplies from russia of 10.015 billion cubic meters.
For the first time in the last year, that is, since the second quarter of 2024, LNG supplies from the United States have become the second source of gas to the EU, surpassing all combined imports from russia.
The volume of russian supplies has become minimal since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
Russian gas supplies to the EU have been falling steadily from the fourth quarter of 2021 to the second quarter of 2023.
During this period, they decreased by 3.5 times: from 36.568 to 10.458 billion cubic meters.
Then they began to grow slowly, reaching a maximum in the fourth quarter of 2024 - 14.125 billion cubic meters.
The current level of supplies of 10.5 billion cubic meters per quarter is the lowest since at least 1980.
At that time, the USSR supplied Western Europe with over 50 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
Since then, exports have been steadily increasing.
Currently, russia supplies pipeline gas to the EU via a single pipeline, the TurkStream.
The supplies are intended for only a few countries, such as Hungary and Slovakia.
According to Bruegel, supplies to the EU via the TurkStream peaked at 398 million cubic meters per week in mid-February 2025, and have since fallen by a quarter.
At the same time, russian LNG is also arriving in Europe, transported by sea tankers.
These supplies increased in 2024, but since the beginning of this year their volume has gone down again.
In January-March 2025, the EU received about 5.7 billion cubic meters of russian gas in the form of LNG.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in early March, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the European Union remains committed to the idea of completely abandoning the purchase of natural gas from the aggressor country russia.
