NBU did not receive documents from Ukrposhta for obtaining banking license

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) did not receive documents from Ukrposhta for obtaining a banking license.

This was announced by the First Deputy Governor of the NBU, Kateryna Rozhkova, in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"If we talk about Ukrposhta, then its acquisition of a significant stake in the bank requires the approval of the NBU. We have not yet received a corresponding package of documents and a business plan from Ukrposhta. We are also waiting for the parliament to approve the law on the bank of financial inclusion. In December, the bill was sent for revision. Since 2015, Ihor Smilianskyi (Director General of Ukrposhta) has stated that he wants to work in remote areas where banks are closing unprofitable branches. According to him, Ukrposhta goes there, delivers pensions and mail, so it knows how to work there. It can theoretically open accounts even now if it receives a payment license," she said.

At the same time, Rozhkova added that there was interest in Idea Bank and potential interest in Sense Bank among international banking groups already represented in Ukraine, to strengthen their positions through inorganic growth.

It is premature to talk about significant external interest as an investment for development, but it will definitely appear, according to Rozhkova.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in September 2024, Ukrposhta announced that it plans to obtain a limited banking license.

The MPs propose that the Verkhovna Rada allow the creation of financial inclusion banks with limited licenses.
