Russians continue to attempt to dislodge Ukrainian forces from positions in Kursk Oblast – ISW

The russian occupation army continues to conduct operations to dislodge Ukrainian servicemen from positions in the Kursk Oblast. No confirmed advance has been recorded, while the russian side has claimed the alleged capture of Gogolevka.

This is stated in the russian Offensive Campaign Assessment by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) as of March 17, 2025, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

"Russian forces continued ground operations to push Ukrainian forces from their remaining positions in Kursk Oblast on March 17 but did not make confirmed advances," the report says.

Among the unconfirmed statements from the russian side, in particular, are claims by security forces about the alleged capture of Gogolevka (west of Sudzha), while the russian military corps commander claimed that russian troops had allegedly advanced south of the settlement.

In addition, the deputy head of the Main Military-Political Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of the aggressor state of russia and the commander of the special forces "Akhmat" Major General Apti Alaudinov stated that russian troops allegedly continue to advance into unspecified areas of the Sumy Region as part of the so-called efforts to create a "buffer zone" after "Russian forces seize all of Kursk Oblast."

Meanwhile, ISW analysts state only that russian troops continued to advance west of Sudzha near Gogolevka, south of Sudzha near Kurilovka and Guyevo, as well as near the international border in the Sumy Region near Basivka on March 16 and 17.

At the same time, the spokesman for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, Andrii Demchenko, stated that small russian assault and sabotage and reconnaissance groups continue to advance on the Novenke-Zhuravka section along the international border in the Sumy Region.

Previously, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that information about the alleged encirclement of Ukrainian army units in the Kursk Oblast by the aggressor country russia is not true and is fake.
