On board the spacecraft will be the robot Optimus, which will be the first step towards landing people on the Red Planet.

"If these landings are successful, human landings could begin as early as 2029, although 2031 is more likely," Musk said.

According to him, further missions to Mars and successful robot landings will be important stages in preparing for human landings.
