Trump increases trade pressure on Canada and talks about "51st state" again
US President Donald Trump has announced the introduction of new tariffs against Canada, which will take effect tomorrow, March 12.
The American President wrote about this on the social network TruthSocial.
"Based on the fact that the province of Ontario, Canada, has imposed a 25% tariff on "electricity" coming to the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% tariff up to 50% on all steel and aluminum coming to the United States from Canada, one of the countries with the highest tariffs in the world," Trump wrote.
According to him, Canada must also immediately eliminate its "anti-American farm tariff of 250% to 390% on various American dairy products."
Trump also said that he would soon declare a state of emergency "in the threatened electricity sector." This, Trump says, will allow the US to quickly do whatever is necessary to "reduce this unjustified threat from Canada."
"If other blatant tariffs that have long been in place are not similarly reduced by Canada, on April 2nd I will be significantly increasing tariffs on cars imported into the United States, which will essentially shut down the Canadian auto industry forever," the US President threatened.
Trump said that the complete elimination of all tariffs is possible only if Canada becomes the 51st state of the United States.
"Canadians will have their taxes cut very substantially, they will be more protected militarily and otherwise than ever before... The artificial dividing line drawn many years ago will finally disappear, and we will have the safest and most beautiful nation in the world - and your brilliant anthem "O Canada" will continue to sound, but now it will represent a GREAT and MIGHTY POWER within the greatest nation the world has ever seen!" the American leader said.
