Italian Prime Minister Meloni supports country's President, who compared russia to Nazi Germany

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has supported the country's President Sergio Mattarella, who compared the aggressor country russia to Nazi Germany, which caused indignation of the spokeswoman for the russian Foreign Ministry.

Reuters announced this, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

As reported, Italian President Sergio Mattarella recently criticized the "wars of aggression" that led to World War II, and stressed that "the current Russian aggression against Ukraine is of this nature."

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called Mattarella's words "blasphemous inventions."

In turn, Giorgia Meloni stated that the words of the russian spokeswoman " offend the entire Italian nation, which the head of state represents."

"I express my full solidarity, as well as the solidarity of the entire government, to President Mattarella, who has always firmly condemned the aggression perpetrated against Ukraine," Reuters quotes Meloni as saying.

It is noted that Italy is traditionally one of the European countries that has close political and economic ties with russia, but under Meloni's leadership it has resolutely supported Ukraine, in particular with military assistance.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in June 2024, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that russia would be forced to surrender if it did not agree to the terms of a peaceful settlement.
