California wants to declare independence from US and is collecting signatures
In the U.S. state of California, activists have begun collecting signatures for secession from the U.S. and the subsequent declaration of independence.
This is reported by the New York Post.
Supporters of secession already have legal permission from Secretary of State Shirley Weber to begin collecting signatures.
Now supporters of the initiative need to collect more than 500,000 votes by July 20, 2025. If this happens, then in 2028 the question will be included on the ballot: "Should California secede from the United States and become a free and independent country?".
If these conditions are met, it is planned to declare "no confidence in the United States" and express the "will of the people of California" to create an independent state.
After that, in 2027, a specially appointed commission of 20 members will determine whether California can function as a separate state. After that, the issue will be put on the ballot. It will be possible to vote in 2028.
How the states will leave the U.S. in practice is unknown. There is no corresponding mechanism in the country's Constitution.
Recall that on January 11, Denmark sent a letter to the Trump team, in which it stated its readiness to discuss strengthening the security of Greenland. Copenhagen also agrees to increase the U.S. military presence on the island.
Earlier, the head of the Greenland government, Múte Egede, stated that the island's residents do not see themselves as part of either Denmark or the U.S.
At the same time, he emphasized that the island wants to strengthen defense and mining ties with Washington.
One of the decrees that Donald Trump signed on the first day after taking office was the renaming of several geographical features. In particular, the Gulf of Mexico became the Gulf of America.
