Foreign Ministry on presidential election in Belarus: Ukraine sees no prerequisites for resuming contacts with Lukashenko

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, regarding the presidential election scheduled for January 26 in Belarus, noted that Ukraine sees no prerequisites for resuming contacts with Alexander Lukashenko and the issue of recognizing his legitimacy is not relevant.

This is stated in the comments of the spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Heorhii Tykhyi, on the presidential election in Belarus, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

According to Tykhyi, the results of "this action" are known in advance.

"It is obvious to us that Alexander Lukashenko will continue to remain an ally and accomplice of Putin in his war against Ukraine, which is taking place contrary to the interests of the Belarusian people...We currently do not see any prerequisites for resuming contacts with Alexander Lukashenko, therefore the issue of recognizing his legitimacy after the announcement of the official results is not relevant for us," he noted.

Tykhyi added that Ukraine shares the position of the member states of the European Union, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and other democratic countries regarding the current lack of basic conditions in Belarus for holding fair and transparent elections in accordance with OSCE standards.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview with American podcaster Lex Friedman that in the first days of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the aggressor country russia, the self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko apologized for the missiles launched from the territory of his country and proposed to strike the Mozyr Oil Refinery.
