Dolphins killed due to fuel oil pollution in Kerch Strait
After the fuel oil pollution of the Kerch Strait due to the accident of russian tankers, 61 killed cetaceans were found. The death of 32 of them is probably related to the fuel oil spill.
This is reported by Crimea. Realii with reference to the non-profit organization Scientific and Ecological Center for Dolphin Rescue "Delfa".
"Let's start with the most difficult. Since the emergency, we have recorded 61 killed cetaceans, of which the death of 32 individuals is most likely related to the fuel oil spill. Others died before the emergency - completely old bodies," the report says.
As noted, for this period of time, this number of deaths is an unusually large figure. In addition, the bulk of these cetaceans died in the first 10 days after the disaster. It is reported that the victims were mainly Azov dolphins, which have always been the most vulnerable cetaceans.
"So far, there have been no stranding of live dolphins, but we can expect an increase in the number of affected cetaceans in a much larger number than usual in the coming months," the animal rights activists added.
On December 15, it became known that an accident occurred in the Kerch Strait, which connects the Azov and Black Seas, with two russian tankers - Volgoneft-139 and Volgoneft-212.
Later, videos appeared on social networks, showing that both tankers were literally chopped up by waves.
