EU declares its readiness to stop transit of gas from russia

The European Union is ready to stop the transit of russian gas through Ukraine.

A representative of the European Commission quoted by DW has stated this.

She stated that the European gas infrastructure is flexible enough to ensure supplies from third countries via alternative routes to Central and Eastern Europe.

According to her, the potential cessation of transit will have only a limited impact on the security of energy supply in the EU. Over the past year, the European Commission, in coordination with member states, has worked on preparing for alternative supply schemes.

Efforts are also aimed at increasing energy efficiency and actively introducing renewable energy sources, which has strengthened the reliability of supply.

Recall that the agreement between Ukraine and russia on the transit of Russian gas ends in 2024.

As Ukrainian News Agency reported, on December 20, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that Kyiv would stop transiting russian gas to Europe from January 1, 2025.

On December 27, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that Bratislava would stop supplying electricity to Ukraine if Kyiv refused to continue transiting russian gas.
