Last astronomical event of year will take place tonight: Ursid meteor shower will reach its peak
Every year from December 17 to 24, the Ursid meteor shower is active. During this period, up to 10 meteors per hour can be observed in the night sky, especially on the peak night of December 23. The Ursids are a great opportunity to enjoy the beauty of a shooting stars on the eve of the holidays.
Ukrainian News Agency will tell you about the last astronomical event of the year.
So, the name of the shower comes from the constellation Ursa Minor, because it is from this part of the sky, from a point called the radiant, that meteors seem to come out. The Ursids are associated with comet 8P/Tuttle, which leaves behind a dust plume, which creates the meteor shower.
The night of December 23 is the best time to observe. The radiant will be high above the horizon, which increases the chances of seeing more meteors.
Meteor shower viewing does not require any special equipment, but there are some simple tips that will help you get the most out of it:
- Choose a dark place. Avoid illuminated areas to make the starry sky easier to see.
- Give your eyes time to adapt. Wait 15-20 minutes for your vision to adjust to the darkness.
- Dress warmly. Winter can be cold, so prepare warm clothes, a blanket, or a chair for comfort.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, today is the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year for residents of the Northern Hemisphere, including Ukrainians, and the longest day in the Southern Hemisphere.
