We do not expect invitation to NATO from anyone, we are fighting for this right - Zelenskyy

Ukraine does not expect an invitation to NATO from anyone, but membership in the organization is the best guarantee of security for the country.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this during a briefing in Brussels.

"We have guarantees in terms of sanctions, financial, and regarding weapons packages. Today, Giorgia Meloni spoke about the next support package for Ukraine. All this is not enough to guarantee that Putin will not come again. The best thing is a strong army, the largest in Europe. We have no right to limit the strength of our army. But strong guarantees are the Alliance. A strong economy. While the war is going on, we have a large budget deficit, UAH 40-42 billion," the President commented.

When asked by Radio NV who Kyiv expects an invitation from, if the entourage of future U.S. President Donald Trump and the current White House administration are against inviting Ukraine to the Alliance now, the President replied that Ukraine is fighting for this right.

"We do not expect from anyone, we are fighting for this right. Each such decision is a very difficult part of the history of our state. Therefore, we cannot expect from anyone, we can do our best to make it work for us," Zelenskyy clarified.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, more than two-thirds of Ukrainians would support Ukraine's membership in NATO without the occupied territories.

In early December, Politico wrote that several European countries had proposed dividing Ukraine into two parts, of which the western one could eventually become a NATO member.

And in November, the American newspaper The Washington Post reported, citing sources, that in Europe they were increasingly discussing the end of the war with a scenario in which Ukraine renounces part of the territories.

Recall, in August 2024, Czech President Petr Pavel stated that Ukraine could become a member of NATO even despite the occupation of part of its territory.
