Ukraine ready to supply food to Syria - agricultural minister

Ukraine is ready to supply food to Syria after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime.

This was stated to Reuters by Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Vitalii Koval on Friday, December 13.

Ukraine, which is a world producer and exporter of grains and oilseeds, exports wheat and corn to Middle Eastern countries, but not to Syria. According to traders, in the 2023/24 season, only about 6,614 tons of Ukrainian corn entered the Syrian market out of a total corn export volume of 29.4 million tons.

"Where it is difficult, we must be there with our food. We are open to supplying our food, and if Syria needs food, then we are there," Koval told Reuters.

Russian and Syrian sources reported that wheat supplies from russia to Syria have been suspended due to uncertainty about the new government and delayed payments. Under Assad, Syria imported food from the aggressor country of russia, but it is now unclear how relations between Damascus and Moscow will develop under the new government, the publication notes.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on December 8, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that Ukraine supports the Syrian people and is ready to restore diplomatic relations in the future.
