Canada to consider transferring banned firearms to Ukraine – media

Canada is banning 324 types of firearms because, according to Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, they should be on the battlefield, not in the hands of hunters or sports shooters.

In addition, it is reported that these same weapons can be sent to Ukraine to fight the russian occupiers.

Defense Minister Bill Blair stressed that Canada has already contacted the Ukrainian authorities, who have expressed interest in some types of weapons, The Associated Press reports.

"Every bit of assistance we can offer to the Ukrainians is one step toward their victory," the Minister said.

The agency writes that the federal government is working on a plan to buy back banned weapons from private owners.

It also reported that while mass shootings are relatively rare in Canada, the newly announced measures come on the eve of the 35th anniversary of the shooting at Montreal's École Polytechnique, where a gunman killed 14 women before taking his own life. The Ruger Mini-14 pistol used by Marc Lepine was on a list of weapons banned until 2020.
