South Korean President declares martial law

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has declared martial law in the country and accused the opposition of "anti-state activities aimed at preparing an uprising," Yonhap news agency reported on Tuesday, December 2.

"The martial law is aimed at eradicating pro-North Korean forces and protecting the constitutional order of freedom," Yoon said in a televised address.

The publication notes that the decision was made after the opposition Democratic Party passed a budget cut bill in the parliamentary budget committee and filed a motion to impeach the state auditor and the prosecutor general. The country's defense ministry ordered a meeting of key commanders and called for "increased vigilance."

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in October, the Korean People's Army (KPA) built new fortifications near the roads and railways leading to South Korea.

On October 15, North Korea blew up part of the railways and highways connecting the country with South Korea.

Recall that the day before, on October 14, it became known that North Korea had put troops on combat readiness on the border with South Korea.
